fall protection competent person Training
This course is designed for employees required to use personal fall protection equipment and those designated as Fall Protection Competent Persons by their authority having jurisdiction (AHJ).
Understanding the Competent Person Role
OSHA does not have a specific Fall Protection Competent Person standard. Instead, it is the AHJ’s responsibility to determine and approve who meets the Competent Person criteria and grant them the authority to identify and correct hazards.

OSHA Definition of a Competent Person
Per 29 CFR 1926.32(f), a Competent Person is “one who is capable of identifying existing and predictable hazards in the surroundings or working conditions which are unsanitary, hazardous, or dangerous to employees, and who has the authorization to take prompt corrective measures to eliminate them.”
This means the individual must:
✔ Be trained and/or experienced in fall protection
✔ Understand applicable OSHA & ANSI standards
✔ Have the authority to take corrective action

- Supervisors, safety managers, and designated competent persons
- Employees required to use personal fall protection equipment
- Anyone responsible for fall protection compliance
This training may serve as formal documentation for the AHJ when designating a Fall Protection Competent Person within an organization.
