“OSHA estimates that more than 50,000 ‘struck-by objects’ incidents occur each year on construction sites alone.”

Dropped objects are a significant hazard on any job site, leading to injuries and property damage. Proactively addressing this risk is crucial to understanding and implementing key safety measures. Here are some critical points to prevent dropped object injuries and property damage:

Eliminate the Hazard

  • 🛠️ Secure Objects and Tools: When not in use, always secure or remove objects and tools from higher levels, scaffolding, and elevated work platforms. Also, consider using lanyards or tethers for handheld tools.

Engineering Controls

  • 🚧 Barricade Dangerous Areas: Set up barricades below higher work areas to keep personnel out of the line of fire.
  • 🔧 Install Safety Features: Use toe boards, nets, and tool tethers. Securing tools and objects prevents them from falling and causing harm.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

  • ⛑️ Wear Hard Hats: When working in areas with overhead hazards, wearing hard hats is essential. Remember, PPE is the last line of defense and can only minimize the damage from dropped objects, not prevent them.

Training and Awareness

  • 📢 Increase Awareness: Regularly train employees to recognize potential dropped object situations. Discuss control methods and preventive measures during safety meetings.

Action Steps:

  • 🔍 Evaluate All Work Areas: Identify where dropped objects can occur.
  • 📊 Apply the Hierarchy of Controls: Use this strategy to eliminate and prevent incidents.

Following these guidelines can significantly reduce the risk of dropped objects, ensuring a safer workplace for everyone. Please stay vigilant and proactive in helping to prevent dropped objects on the job site.

Stay safe,
